The Southwest Trojans won the varsity boys division of the SWCL Conference cross country championships at Blue Eye on Saturday morning. It was the first conference title since 2014 for the Trojans when they captured the Ozark 7 crown,, and their first ever SWCL win.
It was another step forward for the Southwest program under Coach Rusty Roe. Last year, the Trojans ended a long drought by qualifying for the state meet and finishing 8th in Class 2.
Spokane’s Sam Shuman is widely considered to be the favorite to win the Class 2 state meet in
two weeks. He was the individual champion on Saturday, winning on a difficult course in 16:05.
Southwest’s Travis Sickles dogged Shuman’s heels, placing second in 16:31.
Spokane placed three runners in the top eight spots and Blue Eye had three in the top eleven, but Southwest’s depth made the difference.
