Grasslands is a Career Development Event for FFA and 4-H. This year, the Southwest High School 4-H chose Leland Colf, Laney Moore, Allison Corwin and Travis Sickles for the Grasslands team. These students worked throughout the year, coming in every morning and afternoon to practice with their adviser Bill Caldwell.
During competition, students are taken to fields with types of grass and are responsible for judging the properties, characteristics and management of whichever type of grassland they are given. They must fill out the overall grassland condition, how suitable it is for wildlife habitat, soil interpretation and plant identification. Students answers are then graded and compared with other competitors.
This team competed in Springfield with the rest of the teams in the Southwest District on October 10. The team took third out of all the 4-H teams. The team then competed at State competition on October 15 in Hallsville, which is north of Columbia. They placed fourth at State. The team leaves for National Competition in June 2020, which is in Springfield.
