SW Volleyball rallies in late season play

October 17, 2018
The Southwest volleyball team picked up two wins last week and learned their opponent for the Class 2 district playoffs.
The Lady Trojans defeated Gentry, Ark., 26-24, 25-13, 25-17 and Exeter 25-5, 26-24 in non-conference matches and will play East Newton in the district tournament that starts Monday, Oct. 22, at Sarcoxie High School. Southwest improved its overall record to 10 wins, 17 losses and 1 tie.
"We have been fighting through some injuries recently, but the girls make no excuses and try to compete every night," said Coach Steve Voyak. "It has been nice to put together a modest 3-game winning streak at the end of the season. You always want to be playing your best volleyball at this time of the year."
Against Gentry, Seniors Heather Windes and Mariah Munday led the way with 16 assists and 22 digs, respectively. Against Exeter, Sophomore Brylee Wilson paced the hitters with 8 kills and a block. Also, Senior Maggie Robbins was 13 for 13 serving with 2 aces and moved her serving percentage over 92 for the season, and added 7 assists as a setter.
"East Newton is a tough match-up given our lack of size, but if we can serve aggressively and keep the unforced errors to a minimum, we will give ourselves a real chance at an upset," Voyak said.
Southwest finishes the regular season this week against Monett.
