The Barry County Advertiser welcomes recent Cassville High School retiree, Mary Hagens, as a freelance reporter.
Hagens, who taught communication arts to juniors in the Cassville school district for ten years, is a native Texan.
“We visited southwest Missouri a long time ago and loved it,” she said, “so here we are.”
Hagens has a B.A. in English and Music Education from East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas, as well as a Masters in Education from Lindenwood University in St. Charles. Prior to moving to Missouri, Hagens taught English, Geography, Music and History in a charter school in Longview, Texas.
For The Barry County Advertiser, Hagens will be reporting school news, as well as anything else that appeals to her.
Her interests are varied and include family, friends, dogs, kids (especially her former students), reading, writing, music (singing), needlework, and her garden, which boasts heirloom flowers from her grandmother and great-grandmother.
“I’m not the gifted, hard-working gardener that my grandmothers were,” Hagens said, “but it does give me a sense of comfort, home, and continuity when I see their flowers in bloom. I hope to pass them along to my daughters and granddaughter, too.”
Mary and her husband, Tim Hagens, currently reside on a mini-farm near Ridgley, where they are dog-parents to a brood of seven, all of them “rescues.”
In addition to her canine children, Hagens has two adult daughters and, according to her, one amazing grandaughter, who all reside out of state.
One of my personal goals,” Hagens said, “is to train one of my dogs as a therapy dog.”
