Day Hike Suggestions
June 26, 2019
As the weather warms, you might want to venture out and find some new adventures locally. We are so fortunate to live near a multitude of outdoor destinations! Logically, my first choice of destination will be Roaring River State Park. With a number of family-friendly trails, clean bathrooms, and playgrounds, this makes for a wonderful day outing.
Another, slightly farther location, is Natural Falls State Park. Just west of Siloam Springs, Ark., in Colcord, Okla. There is a day pass fee of $5, but the park is very much worth it! The highlight of the park is the 77 foot waterfall but there are also gorgeous gardens and other trails to meander through. Trails are very well maintained and the trail to the waterfall is a boardwalk. There are many stairs to reach the bottom so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
For a short weekend trip, one of our favorite destinations is Jasper and/or Ponca, Arkansas. There are so many wonderful locations in this area, it’s hard to pick just one! However, the most family-friendly hike would probably be Lost Valley Trail near Ponca. At just 2.2 miles round trip, this hike packs in streams, waterfalls, caves and natural bridges! The trail is pretty well maintained in base rock and gravel and is level for the most part. Our young children were able to hike it without much difficulty.
