A tornado watch issued Friday, March 19, for much of southwest Missouri culminated in at least one confirmed EF-1 tornado, according to the National Weather Service in Springfield. The tornado's intermittent 25-mile path began at 5:30 p.m. about five miles northwest of Eagle Rock and ended about three miles south of Hurley, leaving uprooted trees, destroyed outbuildings and a single-wide mobile home with missing shingles in its wake.
The tornado's maximum width was judged to be 75 yards, with an estimated wind velocity of 87 miles per hour, which had subsided by 6:28 p.m.
According to the weather service, this information is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event.
Office of Emergency Management director, David Compton, said a different storm cell caused damage near Purdy, although a tornado was not confirmed.
"Storm damage was reported on HH Highway, near where the state maintenance ends, then on toward Muncie Chapel (on Highway 86)," he said. "We received reports of outbuildings destroyed, plus a house damaged outside of Purdy, and one destroyed in Wheelerville."
