Tournament Trials Trip Top Teams

January 23, 2019
Lee Stubblefield

Two things stood out in this last week of basketball invitational tournaments.
The McAuley girls are for real.
           Southwest doesn’t quit.
The McAuley Lady Warriors shocked the field at Sarcoxie, felling College Heights in an overtime thriller, and then handing the host Lady Bears their first defeat of the season. In the span of a week, McAuley’s girls shuffled the district leaderboard and cast doubt on earlier conference predictions.
Southwest’s boys, struggling through a rebuilding year, trailed Galena by 12 points after three quarters in their seventh-place game at Spokane. But Rusty Roe’s troops rose up and delivered a 26-6 final quarter to claim a 52-44 victory. It was Southwest’s third win of the season.
The Cassville Wildcats dropped a 54-38 decision to Blue Eye in the third place game at Spokane, while the Lady Wildcats won the consolation final over the host team at Galena, 54-49.
The Wheaton Lady Bulldogs, once owners of a 10-1 record, slipped to 12-4 with back to back losses at Galena. Wheaton lost to Hollister in the third place game, 52-40.
The Purdy Lady Eagles defeated Diamond, 29-26, in their consolation semifinal at Marionville, then beat Marionville, 35-32, in the consolation finals. The Purdy boys dropped their first two games at Sarcoxie but rebounded to finish with a 63-59 win over Billings.
The Southwest girls were winless at Galena.
