Trojans race to 8th at State cross country

The Southwest Trojans capped a successful cross country season with an 8th-place finish at the MSHSAA Class 2 state meet on Saturday at Columbia. The Trojans, the second-place team from Class 2 District 6, vaulted past three district champion teams to finish in the top half of the 16-team field.
Fatima won the Class 2 boys title with 77 points. East Newton claimed the third-place trophy with 118. Southwest finished 8th with 226.
Travis Sickles led the Trojans with his 37th-place performance on the new course at Gans Creek.

Southwest’s Rusty Roe was very satisfied with his team’s performance.
“As a coach, you know that you got to coach a great team when the season is over and they are still hungry for more,” said Roe.
Class 1 Boys
Purdy did not field a complete team, but had two boys qualify for the Class 1 race. Zack Brewer placed 67th in 18:42.9 and Dawson Abramovitz finished 94th in 19:05.2.
Class 1 Girls
Both Purdy and Wheaton were represented in the Class 1 girls race. Joy Grace of Purdy finished 86th in 24:02.7, and Lori McNeil of Wheaton placed 109th in 24:44.2.
