Wheaton driver killed in W crash

A crash on Route W about three miles west of Butterfield claimed the life of a Wheaton woman last night. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, one vehicle crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head-on.
The report states Debra L. Heffington, 61, of Wheaton, was driving a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis and crossed the center line around 7:24 p.m. Heffington hit the other vehicle, a 2016 Ford Escape driven by Jacqueline M. Wasson, 60, of Purdy, head-on.
Heffington was pronounced dead at the scene by Barry County Coroner Jim Fohn. Wasson sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Cox Hospital in Monett by a private vehicle.
Neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The Grand Marquis was totalled and towed from the scene by Brice’s Towing, of Cassville. The Escape sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Brice’s Towing, of Cassville.
This is Missouri State Highway Patrol’s 21st fatality of 2018. The surviving driver was tested for alcohol as required by state law.
