The Wheaton Fire Protection District invites the public to join them for an open house at the new fire station in Wheaton on Saturday, October 6. The event is set to start at 1 p.m. and last through 4 p.m. Greg Carrell, Assistant Missouri State Fire Marshall, will present at 1:30 p.m. as the featured speaker. Refreshments will be provided at the open house.
The new fire station is named for longtime chief Bob Lombard who served the department for 62 years with 51 of those as chief.
When Lombard celebrated his 50th year as chief, he shared that he always had a new goal for the department to meet as time passed. The last one he mentioned was a new station for the department. A mere eight months after his passing, that dream became a reality like so many other of his visions for the department over the decades.
Larry Prewitt, chairman of the Wheaton Fire Protection District Board, said the decision to name the station for Bob was unanimous for the five board members. He said, “It was Bob’s dream. He had about four or five different drawings of what he would like to see [in the new station]. We knew we needed a new chapter in this fire department. He was the one who came up with this.
“We all wanted it to be his building.”
The Bob Lombard Fire Station is located at 407 E. Hurlbut Road in Wheaton. All are welcome to attend the event on Saturday, October 6, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with the speaker at 1:30 p.m. The Wheaton Fire Protection District serves Barry, McDonald and Newton Counties.
