Wheaton, Purdy boys win district basketball openers

The Wheaton Bulldogs overcame an early 16-2 deficit and earned a 60-56 upset of Diamond in Class 2 District 12 action at Webb City on Saturday.
The Diamond Wildcats outhustled and outmuscled Wheaton in a one-sided first quarter. Diamond led 13-0 before Kelton Park finally put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Wheaton cut the lead to 18-9 at the first break.
Wheaton trimmed the lead again in the second quarter, pulling within 29-25. But Diamond’s Hunter Schallenburger poured in a late bucket to give the Wildcats a 31-25 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs bit hard in the third quarter, taking their first lead of the game when Zach Leverich swished a three for a 35-34 Wheaton advantage. From that point on, the Bulldogs were in control. Chad Myer, after scoring only 2 in the first half, erupted for 15 in the second half to key the Wheaton comeback.
Diamond struggled to score in the fourth quarter and Wheaton led by as many as 11 before Diamond chipped away in the late going. But the Bulldogs stalled away precious minutes, and fouled to keep Diamond from shooting treys as the clock ran down on a 60-56 Wheaton victory.
Wheaton advanced to face top-seeded Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday. The Cavaliers easily dispatched Jasper on Saturday, 73-32.

Purdy 60, Southwest 42
The Purdy Eagles rolled to a 60-42 district win over Southwest on Saturday in Webb City’s Cardinal Dome. Purdy’s Osiel Aldava led all scorers with 23, and Scotty Henry added 17 in a dominant performance.
Purdy’s Harley Stephens opened the scoring, but Zak Starr answered with a trey for a 3-2 Southwest lead. It would prove to be the only lead of the game for the Trojans.
Purdy held a 13-8 first quarter lead with the clock winding down, but Caden Uthe converted a steal into a coast-to-coast layup to beat the buzzer and pull Southwest within 13-10 at the first break.
But Southwest struggled to score in the second frame. And Purdy pushed to a 26-14 halftime lead.
Aldava opened the third quarter with a trey, but Southwest’s Marquez ripped back-to-back bombs and kept the lead under double digits at 29-20. But Purdy finished the quarter with a 14-5 run, and the Eagles held a 43-25 lead at the final break.
Purdy held 20-point leds three times in the fourth quarter, and the Eagles cruised home with a 60-42 victory. Purdy moved on to a second round contest against second-seeded College Heights. The Cougars dropped Verona on Saturday, 58-37.

In Class 1 District 4 play at Norwood, the top seeded Dora Falcons flew to a 111-61 win over Exeter. Dora has topped the century mark for the second time this season, improving to 26-2.
Class 4 District 12 @ Monett
After defeating Aurora twice last week to improve to 9-15, the Cassville Wildcats will take on Carl Junction in Class 4 District 12 action at Monett on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
