The Cassville Wildcats demolished the Monett Cubs 21-0 at Wildcat Stadium. Shannon Haney and DJ White hooked up for two long touchdown passes and the Wildcat defense stifled the Cubs as Lance Parnell’s team improved to 4-2 on the season.
Last year, Monett came from behind to claim the brawling trophy, 21-20, at Burl Fowler Stadium, then claimed a 35-21 playoff win over the young Wildcats. But on Friday night, the roles were reversed as Cassville answered the bell. The 21-0 score doesn’t begin to tell the domination that the Wildcats enjoyed in this game.
Wildcat miscues kept the game scoreless until late in the first quarter. Shannon Haney was sacked by the Monett defense to kill Cassville’s first possession. Then, after forcing a three-and-out punt from Monett, a Wildcat defender inadvertently touched the ball and the Cubs recovered at the Cassville 34-yard line.
Monett drove into the red zone, but Caleb Hilton’s 35-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right.
On the second play of this drive, Haney rifled a slant to DJ White on the left hash. White never broke stride, outrunning the Monett secondary for an 80-yard touchdown. Drake Reese pounded the PAT through the uprights, and Cassville claimed a 7-0 lead with 2:29 on the clock.
The Wildcats held on defense, but missed a golden scoring opportunity in the second quarter when JR Cavasoz intercepted a Haney pass at the Monett 2-yard line.
Stranded deep in their own end of the field, the Cubs could not sustain a drive. On 4th and 9 from the Monett 15, Bailey Austin’s worm-killer punt bounced only out to the 34-yard line, giving the Wildcats excellent field position.  Cassville drove the short field in just 5 plays, with Logan Carlin plowing into the end zone from a yard out. Reese connected again to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead with 3:24 left in the half.
Cassville’s defense held again, and the Wildcats took over at their own 43-yard line with less than a minute and a half left before intermission.
Carlin was held to no gain on first down, but then Haney popped through the line for a 22-yard gain.
“Haney calls signals from the Monett 35-yard line. He drops back, throws a rainbow deep down the left sideline for White. He’s got it! TOUCHDOWN CASSVILLE!”
DJ White hauled in his second long touchdown reception and Reese nailed his third PAT of the night to give the Wildcats a 21-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Wildcats burning the clock with a conservative running game, while the Cassville defense stymied the Cubs comeback hopes. The Wildcats wasted another scoring opportunity late in the fourth quarter when Anthony Tolbert bobbled a Haney option pitch in the red zone and Monett recovered.
Except for the turnovers, the Wildcats played a solid game in posting a shutout over their Highway 37 rivals.
“It was not pretty, but it’s a win,” observed Lance Parnell after the game.
The Wildcats, now 4-2 on the season, hit the road Friday night to play the undefeated Seneca Indians. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.
