The game wasn’t nearly as close as the final score.
The Cassville Wildcats celebrated Tip Off on Friday with a resounding 63-39 victory over Barry County neighbor Southwest.
The mismatch between Cassville and Southwest could be abbreviated to the contrast in guards. DJ White, all 6-2 and football muscled, versus Southwest’s Caden Uthe, a 5-8 freshman, and super-quick 5-10 Ethan Hoppes versus 5-8 freshman Cruz Marquez.
The matchups at every position favored Cassville both in size and experience. A young and undermanned group of Trojans simply could not make any headway against the host Wildcats.
White scored 8 points in the first three minutes in a brutal first quarter. Cassville bolted to a 15-1 lead at the 2:35 mark, with Dane Martin capping the jailbreak with a long trey from the left wing.
Austin Pippin scored Southwest’s first field goal at the 2:19 mark, and Uthe rained in a bomb at the buzzer to create the 20-8 score at the first break. Uthe was not shy in putting up three point attempts but had to hurry his shots against the taller Wildcats.
Carson Roller opened the second frame with a trey for the Wildcats, but the scoring for both teams bogged down after that. Travis Sickles raced coast to coast and poured in a left-handed layup to end the half with Cassville leading 31-13.
The Wildcats exploded for 28 points in a decisive third quarter. Roller’s back-to-back treys gave Cassville a 46-16 lead with 4:54 on the clock. Sickles poured in a long trey from the left wing and added three more from the floor and line, but the Trojans could not keep pace.
A running clock shortened the final quarter. Barrett Milleson cleared his bench early and his subs played keepaway for most of the period. The Wildcats added only four points in the quarter as they cruised to the 63-39 victory.
Cassville improved to 8-6 with the win, and will play next in the Spokane Tournament.
Southwest slipped to 1-11.
Cassville scorers: DJ White, 15; Dane Martin, 11; Ethan Hoppes, 10; Carson Roller, 9; Jarrod Wallace, 7; Luke Lowery, 7; Andrew Littlefield, 2; and Carson Whittemire, 2.
Southwest scorers: Austin Pippin, 10; Travis Sickles, 9; Caden Uthe, 9; Cruz Marquez, 9; and Matthew Robbins, 2.
