Last Thursday, landowners gathered for the 94th annual Barry County Soil and Crops Conference at the First Christian Church in Cassville.
Conference speakers included Field Specialist in Dairy Reagan Bluel, Field Specialist in Ag Business Jennifer Lutes, Field Specialist in Agronomy Tim Schnakenberg, and Field Specialist in Ag Business Wes Tucker.
The conference was sponsored by First State Bank, Goswick AG, Four States Stockyards, MFA, Purdy Farm Center, Arvest Bank, Barry County Farmers Co-Op, and Security Bank of Southwest Missouri; John Sullivan catered dinner.
Reagan Bluel opened the conference with introductions and discussed AgriStress, an agriculture-specific helpline for farmers and producers. The Helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Producers can call or text (833) 897-2474 to speak to a healthcare professional.
Jennifer Lutes then presented an overview of multi-species grazing. During the program, she explained the cost benefits of having multi-species on a farm, what species are compatible in grazing and browsing behavior, and the importance of choosing species from separate market assets.
After a short break, Tim Schnakenberg discussed Drought-Induced Pasture Reset and how last year's drought would affect grass crops and the weed problem to expect with a focus on managing spring fescue and frost-seeding clover.
The last speaker for the evening was Wes Tucker. His presentation mainly focused on the Missouri farmland values opinion survey results from October 2022. Contact your local MU Extension office for more information on the survey results.
For the first time, Renee Hobbs, with Barry County Soil and Water, had a table with resources available for landowners and the many cost-share practices available through their office. For more information, call 417-847-2862, extension 3.
There are several conferences and workshops available in the coming weeks. The Stone County Livestock and Forage Conference will be held on February 16 at the Crane First Baptist Church from 6-9 p.m. There is no charge to attend this conference.
