Area schools perform strong in track and field sectionals

John Scannell became the first Southwest boy to qualify for state in a hurdle event since 1999 in Saturday’s Class 2 Sectional at Clinton. Scannell bested the field with a 16.05 gold medal performance.
By day’s end, six Southwest athletes qualified for the state meet.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Trevor Sneed, Xander Deshields, Christian Long and Travis Sickles ran a season's best 8:48.32 to snag the final state spot in that event. The top four places in each event qualify for the state meet.
Sneed, the experienced senior, followed up his relay performance with a fourth-place finish in the 400 meter dash, running a 53.53 PR.
Brylee Wilson, Southwest’s lone girl entry at sectionals, finished second in the 400 in 1:02.26. Wilson broke Amanda Maloney’s 30-year old school record of 1:02.6.
At the Class 1 Sectional at Carl Junction, Wheaton senior Rachel Lacey qualified for state in both the 100 meter dash and the high jump. Lacey finished fourth in the sprint in 13.13 and placed third in the vertical contest with a height of 4-10.
Monica Hirojosa, a Wheaton freshman, placed fourth in the shot with a throw of 29-01.75.
The Wheaton boys 4x800 meter relay team of Zane Johnson, Kelton Park, Ricky Miller, and Marek Smith finished fourth in 9:13.23.
The MSHSAA Class 1 and 2 Track and Field Championships will be contested Friday and Saturday at Jefferson City High School.
Cassville girls win Class 3 District 6 title
The Cassville Lady Wildcats won a district title on Saturday at Hollister with a number of strong performances. Both Kyren Postlewait and Jordyn Stafford earned two gold medals in individual performances to pace the Ladycats.
Postlewait won the 100 in 12.91 and the shot with a throw of 39-09.5.
Stafford cruised to victory in the 1600 in 5:35.04, then blazed a school record in the 3200 with her 11:57 flat winning performance.
Opal Gouvion placed third in the discus with a throw of 92-02.
The sprint relays took the last two medal places for Cassville. The 4x100 quartet finished second in 52.64, and the 4x200 group placed third in 1:54.60.
A complete team effort, filled with fourth, fifth, and sixth places helped propel Cassville to the girls title.
Garrett Kritz led the Cassville boys, winning the shot with a throw of 44-01.5. Nathan Dick took second in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10-06.
Cassville thinclads will next compete at the Class 3 Sectional meet at Waynesville on Saturday.
Dalton, George lead Monett at Class 4 District 2 meet
At Carl Junction on Saturday, Kelsey Dalton and Keisha George led the Monett contingent. George won the javelin with a throw of 146-07, and placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16-01.5. Dalton raked in two individual silver medals, taking second in the 100 in 12.68 and in the 200 in 26.69.
The Monett girls qualified in both sprint relays, running second the 4x100 in 51.82, and fourth in the 4x200 in 1:51.11.
Four Monett boys qualified for sectionals, led by Jose Salas Esquivel. He placed third in the 800 in 2:01.15. Jamie Gunn was fourth in the 100 in 11.34. Eduardo Trujillo Morales claimed fourth in the 300 hurdles in 41.91. Chet Butterworth finished fourth in the javelin, throwing 148-00.
Monett athletes will next compete at the Class 4 Sectional meet at West Plains on Saturday.
