Two Barry County deputies are to be commended for an October life-saving effort.
On the evening of October 25, Barry County 911 Dispatch received a call of a possible overdose in Cassville. The Cassville Police Department, Cassville Fire First Responders, Mercy Ambulance Service, and the Barry County Sheriff’s Office arrived just before 11 p.m.
A male subject had apparently overdosed and needed immediate medical attention. Cassville Police Officer Matt Hoover and Barry County Deputies Daniel Harris and James Pennington arrived on the scene within minutes of the call. They took turns providing CPR until the ambulance arrived.
According to the commendation to Sheriff Danny Boyd, Valerie Wilson, with Mercy Ambulance Service, stated, “I wanted to reach out and say what a fantastic job Deputy Harris and Deputy Pennington did on a call October 25, 2023. They responded to assist Cassville PD and ended up helping with multiple rounds of CPR until EMS arrived. Once EMS arrived, both deputies continued to assist in any way possible, from gathering information to assisting with moving the patient from the floor to the stretcher and carrying equipment back to the ambulance. Both deputies also came to the landing zone. Cassville Fire had one responder respond; however, he would not have been able to accomplish as much as he did before EMS’s arrival without law enforcement there to assist him. I appreciate all of the hard work and teamwork that went into four agencies seamlessly caring for one patient. Through their actions, Deputies Harris and Pennington have displayed the kindness, compassion, and cooperation that the citizens of Barry County deserve. Deputies Harris and Pennington should be commended for their actions and life-saving efforts.”
The patient died a few days later at the hospital.
Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd stated, “I would like to recognize and thank Deputies Harris and Pennington for their life-saving efforts during this medical emergency. Their dedication to our community and fellow emergency responders shows they go above and beyond their duties.”
