Candidate Gene Robbins (R)  Southern Commissioner

Gene Robbins (R)
What do you think is the biggest concern Barry County faces, and how would you fix it?

I think our county will be facing several concerns/problems in the near future. I was in a meeting one time and I heard someone describe Barry County as “An Island with a large mote around it.” We have been very blessed with such a wonderful way of life. Unfortunately, some of the problems and situations we are seeing on the national level are starting to drift across the mote. We need to be prepared!

• We need to get more businesses to come to Barry County.

• We need more supplemental training for our law enforcement for the challenges they are facing.

• We need to make our roads/bridges as safe as we possibly can without breaking the bank.

• We need to stand together Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike to keep this nonsense we are seeing on tv out of our communities.

What is your opinion of the present budget and what changes, if any, would you make if (re)elected?

That is a good question but a tough one to answer, since I’m not one of the commissioners yet and I don’t know the reason or the circumstances as why they delegated the money/budget the way they have, but I’m sure they did what they felt was best. I will say this if elected I will make sure the money is distributed fairly.

If (re)elected, how will you be sure you’re hearing the concerns of all demographics of Barry County citizens?

In the auction business I am in the rural communities dealing with horses/cattle, farmers/ranchers on a regular basis as well as the businesspeople in town. I hear their concerns and will continue to listen. I will do my best to address each individual matter and to serve the citizens of Barry County from all backgrounds and demographics to the best of my ability.

What changes, if any, would you make to the office?

BE APPROACHABLE, BE ACCESSABLE and to remember I work for you Barry County.
Some of our smaller communities and road districts have voiced their concerns to me that they feel like at times the county overlooks their needs. This is something that needs to be addressed.

What is your plan for your first 90 days in office, if (re)elected?

I would like to shadow some of our county road workers as well as our deputies. Not to judge their job performance or to tell them how to do their job, but to become more educated of the challenges they face daily. Then when we meet with the Sheriff and Road Commissioners, I will be able to supply them with the funding for the tools and equipment they need to keep themselves safe and to protect the citizens of Barry County.
