Friday night, March 22, marked Cassville’s girls varsity soccer team’s first ever home game, and with it, the team’s first home win. That night, Cassville played Marshfield after being bested by the same at the Fair Grove Shootout on March 15.
After last week’s loss, girls’ varsity coach Jake Forste expressed his opinion that if his team was up to full strength with access to their full starting line, then the game would have gone the other way. At full strength, Forste’s team did not disappoint.
“It was one of the most exciting games I’ve been a part of in quite some time,” said Forste.
Right out of the gate, two minutes in to play, Cassville’s Olivia Holman took control of the ball and scored. This would set the tone for the rest of the game, lighting a fire underneath the rest of the team.
“We came out on fire, feeling good and dominated the first 15 minutes of play,” said Forste.
Cassville’s defense proved formidable at Fair Grove last week, with the team’s two losses both being suffered in the final minutes of play. The same would ring true this week, with Cassville keeping the Marshfield team down for most of the first half of the game.
It wouldn’t be until near the end of the first half that Marshfield would begin to mount an attack against Cassville.
The Marshfield team began to take corner kicks at the Cassville goal until finally, with six minutes left in the half, they scored their first goal of the night, tying the game up to 1-1.
Not feeling shaken, Forste rallied his team at the half. Without missing a beat, Forste switched in a few fresh faces for the second half.
During the second half, Cassville’s defense once again proved formidable, but so did Marshfield’s.
“We made a few adjustments at the half and came out and continued to dominate but didn’t get goal to show for it,” said Forste.
With no goals in the second half and the score tied at 1-1, the game entered its first overtime period. The period wouldn’t last long as, three minutes in, Cassville player Madi Bowyer captured the ball and sliced through Marshfield’s defense, taking the ball from one goal to the other to score and win the game for Cassville.
According to Forste, he and the team are more than pleased with the results and aim to continue working to better themselves for the next game.
“We set the bar pretty high. It’s hard to script it better than that,” said Forste. “We’re really happy with where we’re at, and we’re getting better every day.”
Forste explained that while he is more than pleased with his team’s abilities, he knows that they still have a well of untapped skill.
“Everyone’s really playing well, but some of them haven’t even gotten close to hitting their full potential,” said Forste.
Cassville’s girls’ soccer team will have yet another rematch with Marshfield on Thursday, March 28, at Marshfield. The team will follow up with a second game this week on Friday, March 29, at home against Webb City.
