Cassville takes third at Spokane to highlight tournament week

A busy week saw local basketball teams competing at four area tournaments as coaches and players begin their last month of play before heading into districts.
Spokane Tournament
The Cassville Wildcats defeated College Heights, 56-38, for third place at Spokane. Cassville drilled Southwest in the tourney opener, 73-44. The Cats then dropped a semifinal to Blue Eye, 47-36. Barrett Milleson’s team improved to 6-10 with the two victories.
The Southwest Trojans rebounded from losses to Cassville and Seymour, and claimed a 47-42 win over Verona in the seventh-place game. Southwest now sports a 6-12 record.
Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament (Girls)
The Cassville Lady Wildcats shocked state-ranked Chanute, 53-45, in their tournament opener at the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament at Pittsburg, KS. But the Ladycats finished the week with a 65-16 loss to Kickapoo in the semis, and a 48-23 loss to Carthage in the third-place game to slip to 5-11 for the season.
Galena Lady Bears Tournament
At Galena, the Wheaton Lady Bulldogs beat Verona, 55-48, to advance into the semis. But the Wheaton girls then dropped a 69-31 game to Forsyth, and lost a close battle with Galena in the third-place game, 40-36. Wheaton’s Monica Hinojosa was named to the all-tournament team as the Lady Bulldogs finished the week with a 6-10 season record.
The Southwest Lady Trojans opened with losses to Galena, 74-46, and Seymour, 51-43. But the Lady Trojans - winless a year ago - edged RUSH in the seventh-place game, 49-47 to improve to 6-11 for the season.
Marionville Lady Comets Classic
The Purdy Lady Eagles struggled at Marionville. Purdy lost to Ash Grove, 62-17, in the opener, and then fell to Billings, 68-38. But Purdy recovered to rout Diamond in the seventh-place game, 64-23, improving to 3-12 with the win.
