Coats for Kids event held in Aurora
November 13, 2019
On November 2, the 2019 Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids programs kicked off with an event in Aurora. The local Verona council of the Knights of Columbus, with corporate sponsor Tyson Foods, was able to distribute 125 coats to families from the surrounding area. The event was held in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church gym from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The Grand Knight of the Verona Council, Mark Conn, was very happy with the turnout to the event. He noted that in 2018, 75 coats were distributed in Aurora with this year increasing to 125 coats. He attributed the increase to better awareness of the program through newspaper and radio mentions as well as the help of Tyson's Food getting more awareness of the program to the public.
The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic Fraternal Organization, developed the Coats for Kids Program to allow low-income families to clothe their children in warm coats and hats. This frees up their scarce resources to meet the families’ other essential needs.
The Knights of Columbus uses its ability to buy large quantities of coats at discounted prices and distributes them through over 12,000 councils in the United States. Sponsors help the Knights to increase the number of coats that can be distributed to families in need.
Upcoming Coats for Kids will be held in the following cities:
• Cassville on November 16 at St. Edward Catholic Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Springfield on November 17 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Springfield Cardinal Training Center.
• Marshfield on November 24 at Holy Trinity Church from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
In 2018, The Coats for Kids Drive attracted over 1,100 children. The goal for 2019 is for the Knights to distribute 1,500 coats to area youth. The Knights are still seeking sponsors for the upcoming events. They will receive exposure on both the day of the event and at the other events through signage.
