Exeter Class of 62-63 Basketball Team Inducted into Missouri Hall of Fame

The Exeter Class of 1962-1963 basketball team were honored last Friday for their induction into the Missouri Hall of Fame.

The basketball team who won the Missouri State Championship in the 1962-1963 season with a record of 35-0 were honored in Exeter last Friday, November 18, with the high school hosting team members and family members of deceased members.
The team’s first game of the season was nearly a defeat against Crane, ending with a narrow 43-42 win. The Spring Valley Conference Tournament in Seneca would see the team defeat Pierce City 57-53, with the team then going on to win the Ozark 8 Conference Tournament as well. In February of 1963, they won the regional games, going on to then win the State Championship after a 54-43 victory against South Iron.
In a statement given at the event, High School Principal, Ashley Fly, stated: “The Exeter Community has always been proud of their Tigers. This honor of the 1962-1963 team has created a renewed excitement for future, current, and past Exeter Tigers.”
The 1963 Class “S” State Champions will be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on December 13, 2022, in Springfield. Exeter State Championship team members were: Byron Tucker, Jim Cowherd, John Edie, Jim Cox, Gary Hopkins, Johnny Beattie JR, Tim Mattingly, John McNabb, Jerry Swearingen, Terry Moore, Allen Moudy, Sherrell Cassity, managers- Perry Epperly and Clyde Brown, and the coach- Tom Hewgley.
