Free throw woes sink Lady Bulldogs

December 9, 2020
Lee Stubblefield
The Wheaton Lady Bulldogs won their season opener over Everton, 63-23, but then dropped two of their next three contests for a 2-2 early season mark. At the Verona tournament, Wheaton dropped a 49-43 game to Verona, then nipped Marionville, 38-36.
The Marionville Lady Comets returned the favor on Tuesday night at home, opening the month of December with a 38-34 win over Wheaton. Free throws made the difference in this rematch. The Marionville girls sank a remarkable 13 of 14 attempts from the line. Wheaton only shot 6 free throws, and converted only 2.
The Lady Comets owned the final quarter, 11-5, to claim the 38-34 win.
“We played hard, we just have to continue to get better at defense,” said Wheaton’s Jessica Lombard.
Wheaton is scheduled to host East Newton on Thursday night.
Wheaton scorers: Monica Hinopsa, 12; Giovani Hinopsa, 7; Lily Ray, 6; Allison Whitman, 5; Lori McNeill, 2; Patti Vang, 2.
Marionville scorers: Olivia Hopkins, 15; Hannah Phillips, 10; Zailee Holder, 6; Bre Shapeler, 5; Lucy Newberry, 2.
