Ground-breaking planned for new BL Development Center
September 29, 2021
The Barry-Lawrence County Development Center board of directors is excited to announce the ground-breaking of its new facility in Monett, which will be located at the corner of Chapell Drive and Park Street.
A ground-breaking ceremony will take place Monday, October 4, at 10 a.m.
“We are excited to be moving towards a larger and more up-to-date facility to continue providing another 40-plus years of early intervention services to children with disabilities,” said Lynda Painter, director of the program for the past 31 years.
The Barry-Lawrence County Development Center purchased the home where they are currently located in 1981.
“With the addition of more services, staff and children, a larger building was needed,” Painter said.
The new building will have 6,000 square feet and will include an event center to be used as an indoor playground and a room for fundraisers and other events.
“Each therapy,” said Painter, “will have its own room, an inside storm shelter, and will also be used as a sensory room for children with sensory difficulties.
“We have raised over half the needed money for the new facility with the support of numerous donors including Jack & Margaret Prim, Barry & Lawrence Tax Boards for the Developmentally Disabled, and many individuals and businesses who helped with fundraisers,” Painter explained.
Fundraising efforts continue, according to Painter. A large benefit auction is scheduled for Friday, November 5, at 6 p.m., at New Site Baptist Church located west of Monett.
