With a little over a month left until Christmas, the spirit of giving already fell fast over Barry County. In this spirit, a bar in Springfield, Archie’s Lounge, once again chose local animal sanctuary Haven of the Ozarks as one of beneficiaries for their annual charity auction.
“There’s a bar in Springfield that has a really dedicated group of regulars,” explained Jennifer Silverberg, Haven treasurer. “For the last 20 years, every year, they pick charities to raise money for. They do a rummage sale, a chili cook-off, and in the final event, every December, they do a charity auction.”
According to Silverberg, past auctions have raised as much as $10,000. This year’s auction will also benefit a group devoted to assisting adults with disabilities.
“The volunteers at the bar do most of the work for this,” Silverberg continued. “They get everything done. They sometimes even make smaller donations into gift baskets.”
The auction will be live with a professional auctioneer who has donated his services officiating an event. Items featured in the auction are donations, collected from a variety of places that include hard goods, such as electronics or furniture, and soft goods, such as gift certificates and services.
“It’s a live auction,” explained Silverberg. “They auction all kinds of items, from gift cards, to electronics, to a used car that someone once donated. Anything that anyone can think of, even baked goods.”
Haven of the Ozarks is currently accepting items for donation to this auction. Donations can be dropped off at Haven during business hours, the Barry County Advertiser, or at Fetch! Pet Supplies and Gifts in Springfield. For any donation too large to be dropped off, or for donors that can’t make it to any of the locations, contact Haven treasurer Silverberg to arrange pick-up.
According to Silverberg, in the past, money raised by the auction has gone to various necessary items around the Haven with this year being no exception.
“In the years passed, they’ve helped us pay for our mule and things like that,” said Silverberg. “This year, it will most likely go to food. We go through 2,000 pounds a month, and when it’s getting colder, we’ll be using more.”
Silverberg went on to explain that the fundraiser is crucial to maintaining funding for the Haven.
“By the end of the year, we find ourselves spending more money than we bring in, and we always count on things like this in December to catch us back up,” Silverberg explained.
Haven of the Ozarks is currently accepting donations for the charity auction until December 13. The auction will take place at Archie’s Lounge, located at 1817 Grand Street in Springfield, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 14.
“It’s a really fun event that’s open to the public for free,” said Silverberg. “We encourage everyone to donate or attend.”
Items for donation can be brought to Fetch! Pet Supplies and Gifts in Springfield or Haven of the Ozarks in Cassville. They will be accepted until December 13. For additional questions, or to schedule a pick-up for donated items, contact Haven of the Ozarks treasurer Jennifer Silverberg at (417) 861-6870.
