The Horner Ridge Runners 4-H Club was the recipient of the 2023 FCS Financial Shaping Rural Missouri Grant. This grant is awarded to 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters to provide positive change in their communities.
Several of our members brought up the problem of the net wrap in our area. They said that they see it everywhere on the highway, in the ditches, on the fences, and in the fields. They were concerned for our community. Cars run over it on the highway and it gets caught up under there on the mufflers and such. Mowers run over it in the ditches, and get it hung up in their blades. When it’s stuck in the fences or blowing around in fields it’s a danger to livestock as they can eat it and potentially die. Not to mention when it’s blowing around everywhere it looks tacky and gives people in agriculture a bad image.
After all, we are supposed to be good stewards of the land we have been given to take care of!
Members discussed different ways to tackle this issue and decided to build receptacles and place them around the community.
Right now, we have two receptacles in working order, one at MFA in Cassville and one at Holmes Farm Supply in Wheaton and we’re hoping to place one in Washburn as well. If the receptacles are full, leave the net wrap next to the it and we will pick it up.
We would like to give a special thanks to a few businesses around the community: MFA, Tractor Supply, Michael’s Hardware and Xtreme Graphics and Decal.
Since September, we have already dumped over forty 55-gallon bags of netwrap and will gladly dump a 1,000 plus more if it will keep the net wrap under control!
Horner Ridge Runners are striving to Make the Best Better! We encourage you to “Be a part of the solution, not the pollution”.
