Kelly Moore, Shell Knob resident and owner of Kelly’s Garage, took a rare 18-point doe on September 26 on private land in Shell Knob.
According to Kelly’s wife, Johna, Kelly has been hunting on the same private land with his friends for the last ten years.
“Kelly noticed what he thought was a buck several days in a row on his game cam and he was itching to get out there,” Johna said. “Next thing I know he’s in the office in his camo telling me he’s heading out.”
On the evening of September 26, Moore took the shot with his Centerpoint Heat 425 crossbow with just 15 minutes of daylight left.
“He only had 3% battery left on his phone and called me to get out there so we could find where it dropped” said Johna. “We found it about 200 yards from where he took the shot so it didn’t take us long. We didn’t realize it was an antlered doe until we started harvesting it.”
The couple contacted the Missouri Department of Conservation to confirm the rare anomaly. Johna said the doe weighed about 200 pounds and is now at the taxidermist waiting to be officially scored, which will take about 60 days to complete.
