The Southwest Lady Trojans opened the varsity basketball season with a 55-38 home victory over longtime rival Exeter on Monday night at Washburn.
Southwest spurted to a 12-6 lead in the opening quarter, led by 8 early points from Brylee Wilson. The Lady Trojans pushed the lead to 30-19 at halftime, and outscored the Lady Tigers in both the third (13-12) and fourth quarters (12-7).
Southwest’s tough man-to-man defense set the tone early, as Exeter struggled getting the ball in bounds.
“This was just my sixth day with the girls,” said Southwest’s Destiny Jalbert, coming off a frustrating time in quarantine. “All but two of our girls scored, the bench came in and played hard, and they all played as a unit, which is encouraging this early in the season.”
Wilson was the game’s high scorer with 20, including 7 of 14 free throws.Macy Barrett led Exeter with 13.
Southwest scorers: Brylee Wilson, 20; Kiya Barker, 11; Lyric Bernard, 6; Alexis Raucstadt, 6; Olivia Ayer, 5; Anna Church, 3; Cally Bowyer, 2; Laney Moore, 2.
Exeter scorers: Macy Barrett, 13; Abbi Caddell, 9; Hailey Mattingly, 5; Emma Sorensen, 5; Madison Crumpler, 4; Jasmine Hall, 2.
