After defeating East Newton in opening round play, the Cassville Lady Wildcats travelled to Mt. Vernon on Thursday to take on the Lady Mountaineers in a Class 4 District 12 semifinal. Playing without Marianne McCrackin, Tom Hubbard’s girls faced a monumental task. Led by 26 points from All-Star Lacy Stokes, Mt. Vernon cruised to a 57-22 victory.
During the game, Stokes reached two milestones. She became the second Lady Mountaineer to reach the 2000 point plateau in a career, and she tied the school single-season record for made free throws with 160.
Despite the Stokes scoring circus, Mt. Vernon is regarded as a superlative defensive team. That was on full display Thursday, as the ‘Neers held the Ladycats to just 22 points. Stokes blistered the nets for 13 points in a 26-2 first quarter onslaught that set the tone, and it never really got any better for Cassville after that.
The Lady Wildcats never reached double digits in any quarter, scoring 2, 6, 8, and then 6 in a running clock fourth quarter. Mt. Vernon enjoyed a 39-8 halftime advantage enroute to the 57-22 victory.
Cassville finished the season with an 11-15 record. Mt. Vernon went on to toast Seneca in the district title game, 84-23. Stokes added to her prolific career numbers, scoring 30 as the Mt. Vernon seniors recorded their 100th career win while improving to 25-3 on the season.
