Letter to The Editor

October 21, 2020
Dear Editor,

In last week’s paper, we had a great example from the late Emory Melton explaining how important it is to know exactly what it is one is voting for or against.
The amendments which will be on the ballot in November were printed in the paper to assist voters in determining their decision. I am reasonably sure that most people will not thoroughly read these amendments, and with the legal wording, won't know for sure what they read if they do read them. I say that because I have talked to numerous people who have no idea what they mean.

There was also a letter from a citizen who was suggesting that a "no" vote was the way to go on amendment 3. His reasoning seemed to be that because Missourians voted for "Clean Missouri" this amendment was a slap in the face to the voters in an attempt to undo what they voted to have.

I am here to say that a "yes" vote is the way to vote if you want to continue to have a voice in our legislature. When "Clean Missouri" was approved, many people did not seem to understand that they were voting to have ONE person responsible for who and how the districts get drawn. A yes vote ensures that 5 democrats and 5 republicans make the decisions on the districts. If the "NO" vote wins in this, they can draw a circle in an area of SW Missouri and a circle in St Louis or Kansas City and call it a district. And I am willing to bet the representative for that district won't be from SW Missouri.

This is not an effort to overturn the will of the people. It is an effort to ensure that the rural areas of the state get representatives from rural areas so we continue to have a voice in our government. We know our representatives. We see them and can talk to them. Vote "yes" to continue to have that opportunity.
