Sunshine Tanning & More and Herrin Animal Hospital in Cassville are offering people the opportunity to give to residents - old and young - whose wants are small this holiday season.
Sunshine Tanning & More is home to an “Angel Tree,” created for residents of Roaring River Health & Rehab. The concept is simple. Activities director at the residential care facility, Norma Kirkpatrick, provided Monique Ray - whose mother is a resident there - a wish list for each resident. Ray and friend, Caden Swearingen, then created a paper angel for each resident, on which is printed their gender and items they could use and enjoy during their stay in the nursing home.
With the permission of Sunshine Tanning & More owner, Amanda Ross, a Christmas tree was erected in the salon and decorated with the paper angels listing the wants of the nursing home residents.
“Most people only want things like a warm blanket or a bottle of lotion,” Swearingen said, “although one lady indicated she’d like a romance novel with large print.”
Norma Fitzpatrick says personal shower supplies, such as body soaps and lotions are always appreciated, although bar soap is discouraged for sanitary reasons. Each resident has their own mesh bag with their name on it to contain these personal products.
According to Swearingen, there are about 60 residents at Roaring River Health & Rehab and he would like to see each resident’s wishes fulfilled.
To participate, stop by Sunshine Tanning & More at 101 Main Street, Suite 1, in Cassville, select an angel from the tree inside the front door, then purchase the items listed. Gifts may be delivered either to the salon, or directly to Norma Kirkpatrick at Roaring River Health & Rehab. Gifts will need to be delivered to either location by December 17.
Herrin Animal Hospital at 93 Smithson Drive in Cassville is also sponsoring a giving opportunity: a toy drive for those at the other end of the age spectrum.
“This is the 21st year for our annual Toy Drive,” Dr. Brent Herrin said. “We wanted to do something to help out in the community, and since an OACAC head start facility was right next door to us, we figured that would be the place to start.”
Since that time, Herrin Animal Hospital and OACAC (Ozark Area Community Action Corporation) have teamed up to provide toys for Christmas for area children who might not otherwise receive any.
To donate, a new, unwrapped toy may be dropped off at 93 Smithson Drive in Cassville, or call 417-847-5888 to have your toy picked up. Toys will be accepted until December 12.
The toys will be distributed to local children by OACAC.
