Missouri Bicentennial Quilt
scheduled for Cassville display
June 24, 2020
Since the pioneer days of the American Midwest, quilts have been a cornerstone of Missouri culture, fashion and tradition. In honor of our great state’s 200th anniversary, the State Historical Society of Missouri and Missouri Star Quilt Company, in partnership with the Missouri State Quilters Guild, teamed up to create the Missouri Bicentennial Quilt. Using one quilt block to represent each Missouri county and the independent City of St. Louis, the project features the unique characteristics of Missouri culture and style.
The Missouri Bicentennial Quilt will travel across the state in 2020 and 2021. The Quilt will stop in Cassville at the Barry County Museum and will be available for viewing from July 9 through July 26. Additionally, a digital exhibition is available for viewing online at missouri2021.org/missouri-bicentennial-quilt/.
The Barry County block was created by Vickie Beth Clancy, a member of the Ozark Country Quilters. The block highlights Roaring River State Park, which is a wonderful destination in Barry County. The trout fishing, hatchery, hiking trails and camping are a source of fun outdoor activities for Barry County residents and visitors.
Quilt block submissions were accepted from Oct. 8, 2018, through Sept. 2, 2019. Multiple submissions from the same county were judged according to the level of creativity and craft and description of significance. The judging committee included representatives from Missouri Star Quilt Company, the State Historical Society of Missouri, and Missouri State Quilters Guild. Over the winter of 2019-2020, Missouri Star Quilt Company stitched the blocks together and gave the Quilt its final look.
As the Missouri Bicentennial Quilt travels statewide, Missourians will have an opportunity to learn about the rich geographic and cultural diversity of the state.
The State Historical Society of Missouri is the premier research center for the study of Missouri state and local history. Under the Missouri 2021 banner, the Society is coordinating a bicentennial commemoration in collaboration with local and statewide entities. The mission of Missouri 2021 is to promote a better understanding of Missouri and its regions, communities and people, both past and present.
