The visiting Monett Cubs put a damper on Cassville’s Tip Off celebration on Friday night, claiming a 59-43 victory. The Cubs started and finished the contest with big runs, and never trailed on the scoreboard.
Monett opened with a shocking 14-0 uprising. Cameron George drilled three long treys and Cole McCullough added two more as Monett raced to a 19-5 lead at the first break. But the momentum swung to Cassville in the second quarter. DJ White poured in three buckets to lead the Wildcats back within 24-18 at halftime.
Cassville pulled closer in the third quarter when White converted a three-point play at the 6:12 mark for a 28-23 score. Monett built another 10-point lead, but Bowen Preddy flew to the rim to finish a fast break and Jacob Thomas scored after a half court steal to cut that lead to 35-30.
With the clock winding down, White rose up and swished a long bomb as the horn sounded to trim Monett’s lead to 35-33 at the final break.
In the fourth quarter, Cassville twice pulled within a single point. But Monett’s lead was a wall that could not be breached.
Monett’s Trevon Price was on fire in the final frame, scoring 13 of his game-high 23 points. Price scored six consecutive points to give the Cubs a 49-41 lead with 2:18 remaining.
Playing with three fouls, DJ White sparked the Cassville comeback with scoring, rebounding, and ferocious defense. But he bought a seat on the bench with two minutes left when he fouled Price and then picked up a technical in the aftermath.
Four free throws later, the Monett lead grew to 53-41, and the Cubs cruised home with the 59-43 win.
Cassville slipped to 7-15 with the loss, while Monett improved to 6-16. Both teams have work to do as the regular season winds down and district seeds are determined.
