Multiple races contested for general municipal election April 7

The time is once again drawing near for the citizens of Barry County to take to the polls and perform the greatest of all civil duties, vote. The general municipal election will be Tuesday, April 7. Last week, on Tuesday, January 21, the deadline to file in these elections closed, cementing those who had entered as candidates in this year’s local election.
In Cassville, two positions on the board of alderman were up for election. The incuments of those seats, Mike Vining and Jerry Marple, have both filed for re-election and will be running unopposed. Both positions carry a two-year term.

Exeter also has two alderman positions up for election in this cycle. Incumbent in the south ward, Tyler Henderson, will be running unopposed. Meanwhile, incumbent alderman Tasha McNabb will go up against newcomer Gus Robbins for the north ward seat on the council.
McNabb is a 10-year resident of Exeter and a married mother of three. She has had two years of experience as an alderman for the city. She was originally appointed before being elected to the position in the following election.
“I am familiar with the workings of government,” explained McNabb. “We’re currently working with FEMA to repair our storm-damaged roads. I feel I am the best-qualified candidate, as I am the incumbent and I know what our city needs to keep moving forward.”
Gus Robbins is a 22-year old lifelong resident of Exeter. He and his family run the Robbins Family Horse Auction in Exeter and in his off time, he can be found at public events all across the county singing with his band. Robbins graduated from Exeter High and went on to attain an associate of arts in business from Crowder College.
“I’ve always been interested in politics,” said Robbins. “I grew up in Exeter and I’d really like to give back to the community and this seems like a good way.”

Two alderman positions in Wheaton were open for filing this year in both the east and west wards. In the east, incumbent Brandon Shockley will be running unopposed. In the west, incumbent Stacy Beck has chosen not to file for reelection. The only other person to file for the west ward seat, Jerry Wilkins, will run unopposed. Both positions carry a two-year term.

In Butterfield, mayor Tony Cope will run opposed for reelection. According to a representative from Butterfield City Hall, this will be Cope’s 14th year holding the position, having originally been elected in 2006. The Butterfield mayoral seat carries a two-year term.
Butterfield also has two alderman positions on this year’s ballot, in both the east and west wards. Incumbent aldermen Donald Privett and Rusty Dillbeck are both running unopposed for their seats. Both positions carry a two-year term.

Three seats on the Purdy board of alderman are slated to be on the ballot this year, with one seat in ward one and two in ward two.
In ward one, incumbent Robert Mosier will be running unopposed for reelection. In ward two, both incumbents, Brian Bowers and Dan Musgrove, will be running unopposed. This will be Musgrove’s first official full term as alderman after having been appointed to replace the previous one in July of 2019.

To the south, Washburn had two alderman-at-large positions open for reelection. Both incumbents for those seats, Cheryl Floyd and Connie Deans, will be running unopposed in April. Alderman-at-large seats in Washburn carry a two-year term.

Finally, in Seligman, two alderman seats will be on this year’s ballot. In the east ward, incumbent alderman Gerald Harling will be running unopposed. In the west ward, appointed alderman Bob Lovstad will be running against newcomer Brenda Germain for the seat.
Lovstad is a 10-year resident of the city of Seligman. According to him, he moved to town from Pea Ridge to get back to a small town atmosphere, something that Lovstad says Pea Ridge began losing during his time there.
“I’ve lived in Seligman for 10 years,” explained Lovstad. “I like the small town atmosphere. There’s not a whole lot of red tape to cut through to do what we need to do. It’s an interesting job and there’s a lot to learn. There’s always something new and different to do every week.”
The opponent for the west ward seat, Brenda Germain, could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
