During the month of May, Ozark Area Community Action Center (OACAC) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of its neighborhood centers. During May, OACAC community centers across the ten counties they serve will be hosting open house events to welcome both former employees and the community into their offices to learn about programming.
The Barry County Neighborhood Center in Cassville will host its open house on Thursday, May 16. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 2 p.m. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. During this time, members of the community and current and former OACAC employees will join the staff and have an in-depth look at the services the center offers, as well as the day-to-day duties of the people who work there.
According to Gail Reed, Cassville Neighborhood Center supervisor, attendees will be able to ask employees and supervisors in-depth questions about their services and daily duties.
“We’ll have the center open so that people can see what we do and ask questions about our programs and projects,” said Reed.
Food will be served free of charge during the open house. There will also be a birthday cake to commemorate the center’s 50th birthday. Food will be available at the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be a drawing for a raffle that began last month during a fundraiser. The raffle is for a Mossberg .22 caliber rifle. Entry for the raffle will be open until May 9. Tickets for the raffle are available at the Cassville Neighborhood Center and cost $5 for a single entry or $20 for an “arm-span” of tickets.
Reed, an employee of the neighborhood center for 25 years, is excited about the event and the chance to celebrate with the community. According to her, she takes great pride in the center’s accomplishments since her employment began.
“I’m really proud of our neighborhood center and what we do,” said Reed. “I think we strive every day to do the best for our community and our clients.”
Clients can receive a variety of services through the neighborhood center. These include: utility assistance, housing assistance, emergency shelter assistance, participation in the school readiness fair, Head Start preschool, and life skills classes that educate clients on a variety of topics. They also work with area schools to put on programs like REALL, a life-readiness simulation, and VOICE, which allows school-age children to be exposed to different careers to help them plan for the future.
For more information on the open house or the raffle, contact the OACAC Neighborhood Center at (417) 847-2140. The neighborhood center is located at 700 East Hwy. 248 in Cassville.
