The Cassville Senior Center has a new administrator, but area seniors will recognize her. Kristina Atwood, assistant cook for the center for the past three years, started her duties on December 7.
While Atwood gets her feet wet in her new position, things have primarily stayed the same, but she has plans for new activities for the center once she gets the chance. She said, “We are starting up card games, I’m hoping for twice a month. We’ve already had the Lowell Senior Center come up to play games with them.”
She is excited about her new role at the center she’s been with over the past few years. She said, “When this job opened up, I thought it was something I could do and wanted to do. So I was promoted. I’m really glad.”
The center is a passion for Atwood, who has lived in Cassville for the past seven years. She said, “I really love sitting down and talking to everybody. I think what we do is extremely worthwhile, getting the meals out to people that need them.”
The Cassville Senior Center serves between 3,500 and 3,800 meals each month between what is served at the center and their home-delivered meals. Their service area for meal delivery is from Jenkins to Seligman, a sizeable chunk of Barry County. Funding for the program is provided through the Southwest Missouri Office on Aging.
However, meals aren’t the only things offered up for area seniors. Area senior citizens can enjoy painting classes twice a month, dominoes every Friday, monthly dances, tax counseling and more. Right now, seniors can sign up for tax counseling during February and March for help on their income tax returns.
Also in February, the center will hold their annual Valentine’s Day dinner.
Atwood said, “We are a way to get our seniors out and about and meeting each other. It’s important to sit down and chat.”
The Cassville Senior Center is located at 1111 Fair Street in Cassville. They are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information, contact them at (417) 847-0131.
