Cassville residents were greeted by the sound of sirens just before daybreak Monday morning as area emergency personnel responded to the report of a fire at Mercy Cassville Hospital.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire, which was ruled accidental by the state fire marshal. The fire started in a rooftop HVAC unit, he said.
The fire was quickly contained, and damage was reported in about a quarter of the building, according to Mercy spokesperson, Sonya Kullman.
All patients and staff members were safely evacuated.
“We had six patients staying in the hospital - fewer than normal,” Kullman said. “They were safely transferred by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Aurora."
Power to the building was turned off and the hospital was temporarily closed.
An EMS crew was on standby at the hospital to divert any patients who showed up at the emergency room.
The emergency room reopened Thursday night, and outpatient services - including cardiac rehab, therapy, radiology and lab - were scheduled to reopen Friday, according to a Thursday press release. Mercy Clinic Family is scheduled to reopen March 1.
Kullman thanks all of the emergency personnel who responded.
“We couldn’t have done this so quickly without all of those who volunteered,” she said.
