Blue and silver pinwheels are popping up all over Barry County as a way to draw attention to April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The campaign, called Pinwheels for Prevention, is coordinated locally by the Children’s Center of Southwest Missouri, out of Joplin.
Pinwheels for Prevention gardens appeared in front of the Barry County Jail, Cassville Police Department and the Cassville YMCA this month. The pinwheels serve as a symbol to remind the community of the commitment of “learning more about prevention, supporting child and family friendly policies and services, and volunteering at the local, state, and national levels.”
“Blue pinwheels symbolize that support and help us to bring attention to the needs of abused children in our community,” said Aryn Crawford, Community Outreach and Development Coordinator for the Children’s Center.
The nationwide effort seeks to bring awareness to child abuse.
This weekend also marks the 4th annual Breaking the Silence of Sexual Abuse 5K and 10K on April 20 at Roper Kia in Joplin. Funds raised through the Break the Silence race goes to benefit the Children’s Center in Joplin. The Children’s Center supports children who have suffered sexual and/or physical abuse. To register, go to: localraces.com and search for Breaking the Silence. Registration is $30 for the 5K or $100 for a team of four and $35 for the 10K or $120 for a team of four.
To have pinwheels installed at your business, contact Aryn at the Children’s Center at (417) 623-2292 for more information.
Pinwheels for Prevention is public awareness campaign by the nationwide non-profit group Prevent Child Abuse America.
