During the spring, the baseball fields at Purdy school suffered rain-related damage to the backstop area of the high school boys field. Therefore, the school board elected to begin reconstruction.
"The rain started in early spring and just didn't let up until June," said Purdy superintendent Mindi Gates.
According to Gates, the board of education accepted bids sometime before July. The board then elected to accept a bid from Farrell Construction and True Style Homes, of Neosho, in the amount of $45,813.37.
Construction on the field began in early July. According to Gates, construction is expected to be completed within 60 days. The fields should be fully functional by late August.
The area affected most by the spring rain was the field's backstop. Plans for the new backstop include several structural repairs, as well as a new tin-roof porch area. Construction on this portion of the field is expected to begin within the next couple of weeks, according to Purdy maintenance director Glenn Terry.
Additionally, it was decided one other major change be made to the field. The player dugouts, which were previously housed in the play area of the field behind the baselines, will be relocated to the area just outside of the fencing.
According to Terry, the previous locations of the dugouts caused some difficulty during play due to their proximity to the field.
Construction on the dugout portion of the field is currently underway with the dugouts removed from the field.
Additionally, preliminary dirt work for both the new dugout locations as well as the backstop is complete.
With construction well underway, the new changes to the field are expected to be complete before baseball season.
