December 23, 2020
Lee Stubblefield
Varsity boys roundup
The Purdy Eagles raced toward Christmas break with a perfect 8-0 record after handing Cassville a 52-19 loss at Purdy on Friday night. The Wildcats saw their early season skid continue, falling to 1-6 with the loss.
The Eagles defense stymied the Wildcats, holding Cassville to single digits in every quarter.
14-6, 14-8, 14-1, 10-4 quarter scores told the story.
• Southwest 85, Diamond 75
The Southwest Trojans survived an overtime battle at Diamond, defeating the Wildcats, 85-79. Four Trojans scored in double figures. Cruz Marquez poured in 27, 11 in the overtime period.
• McAuley 65, Exeter 57
Despite a 29-point performance by Kris Allen, the Exeter Tigers lost at McAuley on Tuesday. After trailing by 10 in the second half, the Tigers fought back and cut McAuley’s lead to 45-40. But a 13-2 stretch run gave the Warriors a cushion enroute to the win.
Varsity girls roundup
• Cassville 37, Wheaton 36
The Cassville Lady Wildcats squeezed out a 37-36 win at Wheaton on Tuesday. A 20-14 halftime lead turned into a nailbiting one-point decision. Sharayah Seymour and Riley Morris both scored 8 to lead a balanced Cassville attack. Allison Whitman pumped in 18 for Wheaton, with 10 in the fourth-quarter comeback bid.
The Ladycats have won four of their last five, improving to 4-3 on the season. Wheaton slipped to 3-5 with the loss.
• Purdy 50, Exeter 26
The Purdy Lady Eagles handed Exeter a 50-26 loss, but then sat idle when their game against winless Thomas Jefferson was postponed.
• McAuley 80, Exeter 32
The McAuley girls jumped all over Exeter early, posting a 15-0 opening run and holding a 25-11 lead after one quarter. Kennedy DeRuy scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Lady Warriors. Abbie Caddell led Exeter with 10.
• Diamond 59, Southwest 35
The Southwest Lady Trojans dropped a pair of games heading into the Christmas break. Southwest lost to Diamond, 59-35, then to College Heights, 54-22, to fall to 2-5.
