The Purdy FFA Chapter hosted its annual Barnwarming on Friday, October 8. This year’s theme was, “Sold at the Grundy County Auction,” inspired by John Michael Montgomery’s 1995 hit song. Purdy High School senior and FFA Chapter President Weston Ellison delighted attendees as “Westina,” the embodiment of Montgomery’s, “Ruby red lips, blonde hair, blue eyes,” when he took a turn on the dance floor with each of the barnwarming king candidates, to open the festivities. Other barnwarming games played during the evening included a roping contest for the queen candidates that concluded in a rope-off between sisters Rosa and Robyn Schad, a sheep herding contest, haybale chucking, a stick horse obstacle course, an auctioneering competition and a dance-off between Team Classic Country and Team Business Country, which Team Classic Country clenched with a Hollywood-inspired finishing move that drew raucous applause from attendees.
At the conclusion of the crowd-rousing and fierce competitions, the senior candidates, Zach Henderson and Robyn Schad, were declared the 2021 Purdy High School Barnwarming King and Queen. Their court also included Juniors Joey Billingsley and Kavery Postlewait, Sophomores Hunter Lee and Alexis Davidson and Freshmen Carter Keeling and Rosa Schad.
Prior to the barnwarming games and coronation, attendees enjoyed an all-you-can-eat chili supper and dessert contest. Sara Schad and Kim Goetz won accolades for their delicious homemade pies. Purdy FFA Alumni President Ted Abramovitz pronounced the food offerings, “Delicious! The chili was great, and so were the desserts!”
Abramovitz also gave his stamp of approval on the event itself. “The 2021 Purdy High School Barnwarming was highly entertaining! I thoroughly enjoyed the program and the food. You couldn’t ask for better. I am very proud to be a Purdy FFA Alumnus.”
This year’s Purdy FFA Chapter operates under the guidance of new advisors, Jace Rutledge and Kamryn Sanders. Rutledge noted of the 2021 barnwarming, “It was definitely one to remember! It was a very eventful night, filled with games and good food. I would like to thank everyone that attended and to extend special gratitude to the Purdy FFA Alumni for their support and to our FFA officer team and members for their hard work and dedication to make this memorable event possible.”
FFA Area XI Officer and Purdy FFA Vice-President Eli Webb, who emceed the 2021 Barnwarming, echoed Rutledge’s assessment. “Barnwarming was an awesome time! We had a ton of community members show up and support the chapter, and we got to eat some super good food. I know how hard our chapter worked to put Barnwarming together, and I hope others enjoyed it, as well."
