A fire reported at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 19, caused serious damage to a house at 208 South Business Highway 37 in Purdy.
The family of three adults who lived in the residence escaped without injury. However, according to Purdy Fire Chief, Nick Mercer, one firefighter suffered minor injuries.
Mercer said five fire departments - Purdy, Monett Rural, Monett City, Butterfield and Wheaton - actively fought the blaze for two and a half hours.
“After we had the fire under control, I stayed on the scene for about three more hours until the state fire marshal got there to investigate,” Mercer said.
It was determined that flames were ignited by a grease fire on the kitchen stove, which then leapt to the attic and quickly spread.
