Roaring River Park employees honored for saving a life
September 30, 2020
Sebastian Carter, Dustin Hall, Ranger Corporal Steve Jabben, Aaron Stensrud, Joel Topham and Timothy Wolfe, Division of State Parks employees at Roaring River State Park, have been selected as the department’s September 2020 Employees of the Month.
The team was nominated because of their recent response to a medical emergency and vehicle accident that occurred simultaneously at Roaring River State Park.
On the evening of June 30, 2020, while off-duty, Corporal Jabben was notified of a semi crash on the Missouri 112 hill leading into the park by Park Manager Joel Topham. The semi was blocking one lane of traffic on the hill and park staff was directing traffic around the crash.
As Jabben was readying for duty, Barry County 911 contacted Jabben in reference to a woman who had fallen by the hatchery and was unconscious.
As Topham and park staff were assisting at the crash scene on the highway 112 hill, Topham also received the information about the injured female. Park maintenance workers, Sebastian Carter, Dustin Hall, Aaron Stensrud and Timothy Wolfe, remained at the crash scene to assist public safety personnel and direct traffic while Topham left the crash scene and responded to the woman-down incident.
A park guest had fallen on Farm Road 1135 near the hatchery, struck her head and was not breathing. When Cpl. Jabben arrived on the scene, Topham was performing CPR lifesaving measures and had administered one shock from a park AED device. Cpl. Jabben relieved Topham, continued CPR and administered a second shock with the AED.
The Eagle Rock Fire staff, who arrived on the scene, relieved Cpl. Jabben, and another shock from the AED was administered. The guest began breathing on her own and was transported to an air ambulance, which had landed in the park. The guest was conscious and alert as she was transported to an area hospital.
“There is no doubt that the quick and decisive response by Cpl. Jabben, all park staff and the first responders involved in the incident saved a human being’s life that day,” said Sgt. Shane DeGraffenreid, Jabben’s supervisor, who nominated the team for the honor. “The combination of these two incidents happening simultaneously demonstrates real teamwork.”
Carter lives in Cassville and joined the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in December 2018. Hall lives in Exeter and joined the department in November 2015. Cpl. Jabben lives in Cassville and joined the department in March 2014. Stensrud lives in Exeter and joined the department in March 2018. Topham lives in Cassville and joined the department in September 2018. Wolfe lives in Branson West and joined the department in June 2016.
