Seligman park improvements to increase access

The city of Seligman began the early stages of a variety of park improvement projects to make the facilities more usable for residents.
The skate park behind city hall is getting $2,300 worth of new armor. Brian Nichols, city clerk, said that the city has actually gotten a few years more use out of the original equipment than they expected. “We put the skate park in in 2003 and the armor had an estimated 10 year lifespan, so we did pretty good on it.”
The armor used on the skate park equipment is a composite fiber resin that is weather-resistant and holds up well to heavy impact. The new armor will be installed by public works employees as soon as the special screws come in, which should be by next week. The city already received the armor replacement panels.
The city is also pouring a new concrete pad from the parking lot to the splash pad and putting in some benches to make parents more comfortable while watching their children.
Nichols said, “We already have people asking when the splash pad will be open, and I’m thinking mid-May.” Nichols said that the new concrete needs to be poured and then they are replacing the gravel around the splash pad with sod, which will take two weeks to settle before they can turn on the pad.
The city council approved Cline Construction to do the concrete work for $2,000. The concrete should be poured next week and the sod will be put in shortly after.
The city also has plans to make improvements to the old city park on Highway DD. Nichols said, “The park was vandalized a few years ago, and we finally had to just lock it down.”
However, now there will be a proposal for the city council to vote on regarding putting in a 1/10th mile walking track, lighting and security cameras to protect the improvements.
The overall cost of the project will be $4,600, which will be paid out of the parks budget, if approved. The annual parks budget in the city is $21,100 for 2016. The skate park armor is also being paid for out of the parks budget, but the concrete pad is a capital improvements project.
Nichols said that they hope next year will bring even more improvements to the old city park. He said, “We’d like to install around 10 exercise stations for fitness equipment. That’ll be next year probably.” Equipment would include things like a balance beam, an outdoor elliptical, weight machines, pull up bar and others.
Nichols added that they are also considering installing playground equipment at the old park to keep children occupied while their parents use the equipment.
Improvements to the Seligman parks are drawing additional patrons to use the facilities with the addition of the splash pad last year. Nichols said the goal is to make the old park available for people as well as being safe from vandalism.
