Shell Knob resident dies in head-on collision

On July 31, 74-year-old Tessie S. Mead, of Shell Knob, was killed when her 2017 Nissan Rogue was struck by a 1994 Freightliner driven by Freddy L. Stephens, of Diamond.
The accident occurred at 7:52 a.m. five miles north of Shell Knob on Highway 39. Mead’s northbound vehicle crossed the center line and was hit head-on by the southbound truck.
Mead, who was not wearing a safety device, was pronounced deceased on the scene by Barry County Coroner, Gary Swearingen. Her body was transported to Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville.
Stephens, who was wearing a safety device, suffered minor injuries. The Freightliner suffered extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Thomas Towing of Monett.
Mead’s vehicle was a total loss and was towed from the scene by Table Rock Auto Clinic of Shell Knob.
The accident marked Troop D’s 65th fatality for 2020. It was investigated by Trooper J.O. Prater and Sergeant G.T. Curnes, assisted by Sergeant M.W. Lee and Corporal C.S. Mason.
