Southwest runs past Diamond in district opener

    The Southwest Trojans roared to a first round 76-55 victory over Diamond in Class 3 District 12 play on Tuesday night at Washburn. Cruz Marquez poured in 27 points to lead all scorers, Caden Uthe added 19, and Zak Corwin rained five treys enroute to an 18-point performance as the Trojans  earned a semifinal berth.
    Southwest claimed a 24-22 lead following a torrid first quarter. But the Trojans defense clamped down, holding Diamond to just six points in the second quarter and eight in the third. Southwest led 38-28 at halftime and never looked back.
    The Trojans will play at second-seeded Miller on Thursday.
    In Class 2 District 12 action, College Heights pulled the upset on the road, downing second-seeded Wheaton, 68-54. The Bulldogs finished the season at 12-11.
    Class 1 district basketball opened play on Saturday, with School of the Ozarks defeating Exeter, 79-50, in District 4 play. The Tigers were 2-3 in their final regular season stretch, including an overtime loss to College Heights, but could not keep pace with SofO. Exeter finishes the season at 3-17.
