SW student donates to Wigs For Kids

Austin Peterson, of Washburn, decided to join the National Guard - but not before donating his four years of hair growth to Wigs for Kids, a nonprofit organization that has been “serving children suffering from hair loss since 1981.”
Peterson learned of the organization from a coworker who told him that her brother-in-law used to donate.
“I figured if I wasn’t going to use my hair, maybe somebody else could,” said Peterson.
The hair was cut and donated on the afternoon of August 11.
Peterson won’t be going to boot camp straight away, as he won’t graduate from Southwest High School until spring of 2022.
After his graduation, he’ll head to Fort Leonard Wood in south-central Missouri.
Military history played a small factor in his decision, as Peterson’s father was in the Navy for four years.
Peterson had no plans for anything post-high-school, so now he’s glad to “have something to do for the next several years.”
Peterson works at the Roaring River Park Store - during the day in summers, and nights when school starts.
Peterson is excited about his future National Guard career and is happy about donating the mane he’ll no longer need.
