According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, Janet Santos, 26, of Neosho, was driving the truck westbound about five miles west of Butterfield. Troopers determined that the vehicle ran off the roadway on a curve and struck a tree, ejecting one of the passengers, Samuel Peter, 44, of Neosho. Around 1:10 a.m., the Highway Patrol responded to the scene where four people were injured. Santos and Peter received moderate injuries from the crash. Santos was transported via ambulance to Cox Hospital in Monett while Peter was taken by private vehicle to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.
Two other passengers, Matha Hadley, 47, of Neosho, and Elnora Pelep, unknown age, of Neosho, were seriously injured and had to be flown to Cox Hospital in Springfield. Neither Pelep nor Hadley were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Santos was wearing a seatbelt, and the report lists Peter as exempt from a safety device.
