Paul Fiscus, a member of the local chapter of Veterans Taskforce of America, invites all honorably-discharged military veterans to a free family picnic at the CCC Shelter on F Highway at Roaring River this Saturday, July 17, 12 - 4 p.m.
The picnic is planned, says Fiscus, just to provide the opportunity for socialization and camaraderie to those who have served in the military.
“We hope to make it an annual event,” he said.
The picnic is hosted by the local chapter of the Veterans Taskforce of America.
“We’ll provide hamburgers, hot dogs and the stuff to go with them,” he said. “We’ll also have live music and games. Just bring your families and have fun.”
Fiscus, a Vietnam veteran who lives in Eagle Rock, says the local Veterans Taskforce chapter, which currently has about 30 members, was only open to Vietnam vets for its first ten years.
“There are fewer of us around these days, though,” he said, “so we’d like to see new and younger members join. We’ve reorganized and opened it up to veterans of all ages, including to those who haven’t seen war-time service.”
Fiscus said the Veterans Taskforce typically holds three or four fundraisers a year.
“Proceeds from the fundraisers,” he said, “stay within the community. Sometimes we help individual veterans who have a need, or sometimes we donate to organizations that benefit veterans.”
Fiscus said they’ve recently donated to Kids of Our Heroes Adventure Camp, in Jenkins, which serves the children of wounded veterans and lost warriors.
“We also donate to Honor Flights,” he said.
Honor Flights transport military veterans to war memorials in Washington D.C., at no cost to the veterans.
“Another reason we’re planning the picnic,” Fiscus said, “is just to make area veterans aware that we’re here. We want to let them know we’re here if they need us,” he said.
Veterans Taskforce of America meets the first Sunday of every month, at 4 p.m., at Angus Branch Steakhouse in Monett.
