Veterans to be honored across county

November 6, 2019
Charlea Estes-Jones

Each year, area schools and community groups step up to honor some of The United States' most valued citizens: veterans. This year is no exception, with plenty of opportunities for citizens to show appreciation to the group that sacrificed so much to protect freedoms over the years.

This year includes events that spread across Barry County.

Southwest R-IV will thank veterans with their annual assembly. On Friday, November 8, the school will host veterans and their families at 11:30 a.m. for lunch in the high school commons area with the assembly beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the high school gym.

In Shell Knob, the VFW Post 2203 will host a commemorative event at the Veterans Memorial Garden just off Highway 39, adjacent to Fohn Funeral Home,  Monday, November 11, at 11 a.m. After the hour-long commemorative service, attendees are encouraged to go to the Post 2203 building, just north of Shell Knob on Highway 39, for a bar-b-que luncheon sponsored by Jim Fohn and Fohn Funeral Home. Certain members of the Shell Knob Memorial Post 2203 will also be awarded quilts by the Shell Knob Discovery Quilt Guild during the luncheon.

In Cassville, the high school will host the school's 31st annual Veterans Day assembly on Monday, November 11, beginning at 9 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. Seating starts at 8:30 a.m. and veterans are encouraged to sign in so the school can recognize all veterans in attendance during the event and present them with a certificate of thanks. Performances will include the Cassville mass choir and concert band, as well as essay readings and a JROTC Thirteen Folds of the American Flag demonstration.

Following the event, there will be a reception for veterans and their families in the FEMA gym with pulled pork sandwiches, chips and baked beans. For more information, call the school at (417) 847-3137.

Wheaton Schools will also their Veterans Day assembly on Monday, November 11, in the high school gymnasium beginning at 10 a.m. The commemorative assembly to thank veterans for their service will include performances and presentations. At 11:30 a.m., the Wheaton FFA will also provide and serve lunch to all veterans and their families.

Exeter School will honor veterans as well as active duty military members on Veterans Day at 1:30 p.m. in the commons area of the school. The honor guard from Scott Tech will present the colors and there will be music from the school's choirs and bands as well as special readings and a guest speaker.

Purdy School's National Honor Society will host a Veterans Appreciation Reception for all area military veterans, active duty personnel and their families. Beginning at 10 a.m., the school will host refreshments in the Performing Arts Center lobby. Then, a veterans appreciation program will be held in the auditorium at 10: 30 a.m. with special music from the band and choir.

In Monett, there will be a Veterans Day assembly on Monday at 1 p.m. in the high school gym. Veterans will be honored with an assembly and a speaker during the event.
