Wildcats set to host Mountaineers in district title game

November 11, 2020
Lee Stubblefield
The Class 3 District 6 playoff bracket is a tale of two paths.
Mt. Vernon advanced to the district title game with a convincing 42-0 blowout of Seneca. The Indians survived a 35-30 Aurora comeback in the quarterfinals, before folding the teepee against the Mountaineers.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Cassville cruises into the title game unscathed and untested. Both the quarterfinal and semifinal games on Cassville’s side of the bracket were decided by forfeit. Hollister bowed out of their game against Reeds Spring, and then RS ceded that semi contest to Cassville.
Covid 2, Tigers and Wolves 0
Perhaps the biggest question surrounding the Cassville-Mt. Vernon tilt is: will there actually be a game? With covid cases on the rise, the coaching staffs of both teams are on high alert. But keeping high school boys in social distancing mode is a lot like herding cats. Success is due as much to sheer luck as to planning and execution.
If there is a game, it will be a rematch of the season opener where the ‘Neers nipped the ‘Cats 21-13 on a last second Hail Mary. Cassville was missing key players for that game, most notably running back Zach Coenen, who did not play at all, and quarterback Hayden Sink, who exited with an injury with the outcome still in the balance.
But the Wildcats are relatively healthy and certainly rested, having not played since October 23, when they beat McDonald County 44-21 and extended their regular season ending win-streak to four games.
Cassville enters Friday’s game with an 8-2 mark, forfeit and all. Mt. Vernon comes to town with a 5-5 record, including four straight losses prior to the playoff win over Seneca.
